China eyes post-mobile era, steps up on drones, VR, and more

HAGAI TAL, TAPTICA MAY 7, 2016 9:03 AMTAGS: CHINA, GMIC, HAGAI TAL[IMG]Above: The Hover Camera demo at GMIC Beijing, 2016.

Image Credit: Hover Camera YouTube channelEconomists may still classify China as a developing economy, but those of us in the technology space see China as the world's largest incubator for new ideas and products. At the Global Mobile Internet Conference (GMIC) in Beijing this week, a Tesla executive declared China essential to the carmaker's plans for a global fleet of electric vehicles. But China's power isn't just about the size of its consumer market and its labor supply; China is an engine that will drive the next round of innovation.

Last year, Pew put the number of sma rtphone owners in China at 58 percent of the population. Naturally, the young lead the way (among those 18-34, smartphone ownership is at 85 percent). But according to Pew, overall smartphone penetration is "skyrocketing." More importantly, mobile payments are already reshaping lifestyles in China. That level of penetration has created fierce competition, allowing China to innovate and export in the mobile space; gone are the days of copycatting U.S. technology.

And yet, at the GMIC event, there's a hint that smartphones will soon be obsolete. Alvin Wang, China regional president of HTC VR welcomed attendees to the "post-mobile era." How could that be?

"2016 is the first year of virtual, and the revolution is happening," Wang said. "Some people may think VR devices are just advanced game consoles. As a matter of fact, VR has a broad market apart from gaming."

Wang outlined how VR would shape areas ranging from entertainment to education. Meanwhile , Xiaomi announced plans to launch the company's first drone and smartwatch. Smart home appliances were on display throughout the GMIC show floor. But perhaps the biggest hit of all was the Hover Camera — an AI-powered self-flying drone. Naturally, the Hover Camera is being billed as the ultimate selfie platform, but of course, that's just one application to prove the concept; down the road, anything is possible.

Add it all up — drones, WiFi-enabled devices, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality — and one can begin to see Wang's point that the smartphone, once the holy grail of mobile tech, is actually just a stepping stone to a fully connected, totally immersive future. Two decades from now, we might just visit virtual museums, where AI tour guides teach our children about antique technologies like the iPhone.

But looking to the immediate future, it's clear that China is already playing a big role in the development of mobile technology and that the furtherance of that trend will be shaped by mergers and acquisitions. In part, that assertion comes from China's demonstrated capacity and will to lead technological innovation, but mergers and acquisitions also make sense for tech companies outside of China. Tech products, after all, thrive on scale, and China has scale like no other. Just as important, as a so-called developing economy, China is still very much in the middle of a massive build, and because it can leapfrog legacy technologies like landline telephones, Chinese technologists can remain nimble.

U.S. and European companies should see the emergence of China as a technology leader for what it is — a massive opportunity. Naturally, there will be cultural and regulatory hurdles along the way, but the big picture is one where technological development is no longer limited to hubs, and the walls that have stood in the way to cooperative innovation are falling fast.

More: MobileBeat 2016 is focused on the paradigm shift from apps to AI, messaging, and chatbots. Don't miss this opportunity: July 12 and 13 in San Francisco.

Huawei launches flagship smartphone P9 and P9 Plus with dual camera

As of a year ago, it had reached the third place in global market share, trailing only Samsung and Apple by unit sales. Moreover, it is smaller than P9 Plus and carries major footprints of iPhone 6s. The P9 has a 5.2-inch display, but...

Underneath the hood, both devices will run on Huawei's Kirin 955 chipset, with a 2.5GHz octa-core CPU for the quad-Cortex-A72 cluster, while the quad-Cortex-A53 is set at 1.8GHz. The phone comes in two variants with a 3GB ram with a storage capacity of 32GB or a 4GB ram with a storage capacity of 64GB. There is also a 64GB variant with 4GB of RAM and both support microSD cards of up to 128GB.

The Chinese smartphone giant has partnered with German camera company Leica to develop the cameras, one of which shoots in full colour, while the other is monochrome.

What do you get when you mix a couple of dashes of Leica with a fast-growing smartphone developer, and add a splash of Hollywood glamor courtesy of actress Scarlett Johansson?

The rear camera system comprises of two 12- megapixel lenses that work together to capture fantastic images by making the most of available light. The monochrome assists taking accurate shots while the RGB one helps to pose great shots. Its field of view in 35 mm is in proportion to a 27 mm lens.

Those who could get their hands on the P9 and P9 Plus samples at the launch event lauded their camera interface. While Leica hasn't provided any hardware for the phone, Huawei has said that the overall quality is sufficient for Leica to "certify" the phone.

According to Android Authority, the phone "feels like a camera with a phone attached" and has "more camera modes... than you can shake a stick at". However, optical image stabilization (OIS) isn't there because it is not possible to stabilize both the cameras identically. Thus, OIS won't be required as.

It's USB C though, which although more advanced than the micro USB connection we're all used to, means you are now destined to carry a charger with you again until more phones have been released with the same connection. It gives it a premium y vibe and end to end display dominate the front. There is one fingerprint sensor at the back. The P9 Plus also offers dual-IC Rapid Charge, giving users six hours of talk time after a 10-minute charge.

The Huawei P9 will retail for $682 (€599) for the 3GB/32GB model and $740 (€649) for the 4GB/64GB model.

P9 will be available on 16 April in Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, China, Czech Republic, Egypt, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and the UK.

Millions Of Passwords StolenWhile this may sound like a reason to panic, reports indicate that the stolen credentials are likely compiled from older hacks . A recent survey by the Cloud Security Alliance found that stolen online account credentials cause 22% of big data breaches.

Apple Loses iPhone Trademark Case in China to Leather Goods Company

A Beijing Court has ruled that a Chinese maker of leather goods can brand them under the "iPhone" name. It's the most recent of Apple's challenges in China.

China may be among Apple's greatest revenue opportunities, but it also continues to present challenges. Most recently, that included the loss of the exclusive use of the word "iPhone."The Beijing Municipal High People's Court has ruled against Apple in a trademark dispute, granting authority to the Beijing Xintong Tiandi Technology Co. to use the iPhone name on its wallets, smartphone cases and other leather goods. The ruling occurred in March but was only recently circulated.According to a document posted in the Chinese language Legal Daily, Apple filed to trademark "iPhone" on Oct. 18, 2002, but the request wasn't approved until Nov. 21, 2013. Xintong seems to have applied for and received its trademark in 2007. "Apple is disappointed the Beijing Higher People's Court chose to allow Xintong to use the iPhone mark for leather goods when we have prevailed in several other cases against Xintong," a spokesperson for Apple told the BBC.He added, "We intend to request a retrial with the Supreme People's Court and will continue to vigorously protect our trademark rights. We work hard to make the best products in the world and want to ensure our customers' experience is not compromised by companies who try to profit from using our brand."According to the BBC, Legal Daily is considered a "mouthpiece for the country's Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission." In March, the Beijing government ruled that all digital content shared in China must be stored in servers based on the mainland. Soon afterward, consumers in China were cut off from the Apple iBooks Store and iTunes Movies services. Those who visited the content found only a message saying they were "unusable," according to Reuters. The new law is thought to be a way to encourage the use of services and content from China-based providers like Alibaba and Tencent. On April 29, billionaire investor Carl Icahn sold his stake in Apple, citing concerns about Chinese government interference and economic slowdown in China.Icahn told CNBC that he made roughly $2 billion on his sales of Apple stock, and that were China to become more "steadied," he would buy back in.During Apple's most recent earnings announcement, CEO Tim Cook said that Apple Pay had a successful launch in China in March, and that 80 percent of customers there are purchasing their first Macs. During the March quarter, Apple op ened seven new stores in China, bringing its total to 35, and it plans to open five more during the current quarter."I think China is not weak as has been talked about," Cook said during the April 26 call. "I see China as maybe not having the wind at our backs that we once did, but it's a lot more stable than what I think is the common view of it. So, we remain really optimistic on China."
