Make in India’ devices pushing smartphones sales: Report

While India shipped a total of 52.8 million handsets against 55.4 million in the first quarter this year – registering a decline of 4 percent (year-on-year), "Make in India' smartphones have come of age and are pushing the sales, a latest report said on Tuesday.

The contribution of India brands was at an all-time high of 45 percent – up 7 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2015 and "made in India" handsets contributed 67 percent to the sales, said the "India Mobile Handset Report for 1Q CY 2016" by the market research firm CyberMedia Research (CMR).

Interestingly, the contribution of Chinese and global brands declined in the same period. "We saw for the first time that price band of Rs.10,000-Rs.15,000 contributed the maximum (22 percent) towards the smartphone shipments. Usually, the prime contributor used to be the price bracket of Rs.6,000-Rs.8,000," said Faisal Kawoosa, lead analyst with CMR's Telecom Practice.

This increase has been primarily due to introduction of shipments by Chinese smartphone maker LeEco and launch of new handsets from Lenovo, Oppo, LG, Panasonic, Micromax, Intex, LYF (RJio) and Vivo in Rs.10,000-Rs.15,000 price bands.

"Some of the smartphones that have done exceptionally well in this price band include Lenovo's K4 Note, LeEco's Le 1s, Micromax's Canvas Mega 4G, Huawei's Honor 5X and Intex's Aqua Freedom," Faisal added.

The average selling prices for smartphones is also going up. While in the fourth quarter of 2015, the average selling price for a smartphone was Rs.12,285, it was Rs.12,983 in the first quarter this year. The same was Rs.10,364 in the first quarter of 2015.

"Among the handsets produced out of India, 66 percent of the smartphones and 60 percent of the 4G smartphones were manufactured in India itself. Now is the time to look at the premium segment where the contribution is negligible," Faisal noted.

While the global players are increasingly focusing on 4G LTE technology, domestic players could still see some profits in 3G technology, the report added.

Samsung, Micromax and Intex remain the "top three" players in the overall market in India. "In the second quarter, we are waiting to see how Micromax performs after tweaking its brand logo and creating a new approach towards marketing and sales strategy," said Krishna Mukherjee, analyst, telecoms at CMR.

Xiaomi launches 6.44-inch smartphone Mi Max, MIUI 8 in China

Mumbai: Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi on Tuesday announced Mi Max, its latest smartphone with the largest-ever screen in its lineup to date. It also unveiled MIUI 8, the next generation of its popular Android-based operating system.

The 6.44-inch supersized screen on Mi Max makes it perfect for viewing multimedia content, especially when coupled with 'Sunlight Display' for more accurate colours even in bright conditions.

Mi Max also comes with a massive 4850mAh battery, which is sufficient for the device to last a day. According to the company, Mi Max can support up to 14 hours of streaming video (via Wi-Fi) in a single charge, due to the massive battery and optimisations found in the new MIUI 8.

Mi Max has a metal body which transitions to the gently curved edges of the front 2.5D glass surface.

Even with a much larger display than most other smartphones, Mi Max is as thin as many 4.7-inch phones with a thickness of just 7.5mm.

At 203g, it is only slightly heavier than many 5.5-inch models. The handset also equips all connectivity options, and sports a decent fingerprint scanner.

Mi Max is equipped with one of the fastest mobile processors in the market, Qualcomm Snapdragon 650/652 processor, which is powered by six or eight Cortex A72 and A53 cores. Combined with the Adreno 510 graphics chip, Mi Max delivers a great multimedia and gaming experience.

In terms of camera quality, the smartphone features a 16MP primary camera with Phase Detection auto-focus.

Mi Max is available with three internal storage options—32GB, 64GB, and 128GB, along with microSD support for cards up to 128GB.

Mi Max (Snapdragon 650, 3GB + 32GB) will be available at RMB 1499. The Snapdragon 652 variant with 64GB storage (3GB RAM) and 128GB storage (4GB RAM) will retail at RMB 1699 and RMB 1999 respectively.

Mi Max will be available in mainland China starting 17 May through online channels including Mi.com, and across the country's Mi Home outlets.

    MIUI 8 unveiled

The company also unveiled MIUI 8 today, the latest update to its popular Android-based operating system with a refreshing redesign and several innovative new features.

Inspired by the kaleidoscope, MIUI 8 features an overhauled design as seen in the bold colours, interactive animations and system fonts including Xiaomi's very own Mi Lanting font.

MIUI 8 also builds in several technology breakthroughs such as being able to clone apps and manage multiple accounts on the same phone.

This means that users can have two instances of a messaging app on the same phone that correspond to different accounts, removing the inconvenience of having to log in and out on the same app.

With MIUI 8, users can also split their smartphones into two accounts. This means that a different password or fingerprint can allow users to access a different home screen entirely, with different apps and data that are completely independent.

According to their needs, users can choose to merge certain data such as the address book and call history.

MIUI 8 also introduces the ability to take long screenshots beyond what can be seen on the screen, which is very useful for sharing long articles in just one image.

The calculator app has also been improved with more advanced functions such as bank loan and mortgage interest calculation, as well as currency and unit conversions.

Photo gallery is one of the most-used apps in MIUI, and it now comes with several optimisations.

With quick share controls, users can swipe up to share and change filters with a tap. They can also doodle on photos, add stickers, and make use of enhanced video editing tools with various effects and music.

In MIUI 8, scanning capabilities have been expanded tremendously to go beyond QR codes.

Users can now scan documents to get an image output, scan business cards to add to their contacts, scan physical objects to search and shop for similar items on Taobao, and even scan mathematics questions for step-by-step solutions.

Beta testing for MIUI 8 in China will start on 1 June, while the developer ROM will be released on 17 June with support for Mi 2/2S/3/4/4c/4S/5/Max, the entire Redmi and Redmi Note series, as well as the Mi Note series.

Chinese photo-editing app maker Meitu Technology Co., Ltd. is gearing up to launch its latest smartphone in China that will feature two very powerful 21 megapixel front and rear-facing cameras. The new smartphone recently got certified by the telecommunications equipment certification center TENAA, which is the Chinese equivalent of the FCC in the United States.

For those who don't know, Meitu was founded in 2008 in the city of Xiamen by entrepreneur Cai Wensheng. The company currently manufactures smartphones and is also in the business of developing image-editing software applications that provide numerous tools and functions for editing photos.

According to TENAA, the smartphone sports a 5.0-inch display screen with a 1,920 x 1,080 pixel resolution (Full HD), and features two 21 megapixel cameras on both sides of the device. Under the hood, the phone is equipped with MediaTek's Helio P10 processor, 3GB of RAM, and is expected to come with the Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system out of the box.

Design-wise, the device looks identical to Meitu's V4 smartphone (diamond-like shape) that was launched in 2015, however, this model sports a gold metallic chassis with white panels on the front and backside of the device, according to Giz China. Unfortunately, TENAA's listing did not provide any more details for the rest of the specifications. Since the phone already passed certification, it could arrive in the Chinese market sometime this month.

In the meantime, Meitu's products have continued to dominate selfie-editing apps in China, attracting about 360 million monthly active users. Meitu XiuXiu or Meitu Pic is one of the company's most popular software products launched in 2013. This app provides users with many tools for editing images such as filters, Auto enhance, Magic Brush, frames, beauty retouch and collage. Meitu Pic was developed by Wu Xinhong, who is the current Chief Executive Officer of Meitu.

Exynos 8890-Powered Meizu PRO 6 Variant Spotted In China

Meizu is one of the more interesting China-based smartphone manufacturing companies. They've managed to sell 20.5 million smartphones in 2015, which is a significant improvement over 2014 when the company shipped 4.4 million units. The Meizu MX5 and PRO 5 were the two most powerful smartphones the company introduced last year, and even though the Meizu MX6 was expected to land first this year, that device is yet to be announced, while the PRO 6 has been released last month. The Meizu PRO 6 is significantly smaller than its predecessor, and unlike the PRO 6, is it fueled by a MediaTek SoC. Many people were expecting to see the Exynos 8890 or the unannounced Exynos 8870 in the PRO 6, but did not happen. Well, judging by the newest leak, that might change soon, read on.

If you take a look at the image below this article, you'll get to see a leaked screenshot showing off the unannounced Meizu PRO 6 variant which is fueled by the Exynos 8890 SoC. The screenshot also reveals that this device sports 4GB of RAM and weighs 160 grams. The Android 6.0 Marshmallow has also been listed here, and that's more or less all the info we have at the moment. Now, for those of you who didn't know this, Meizu has released an Exynos-fueled handset both in 2014 and 2015, so this information might as well be accurate. While some people praised the PRO 6, others were disappointed Meizu did not include an Exynos chip in that smartphone. The inclusion of Samsung's flagship processor could also represent a switch to UFS 2.0 standard for the company, the Helio X25 does not support UFS 2.0 flash storage, so they already released PRO 6 sports eMMC 5.1 standard which is inferior to the UFS 2.0.

Now, we cannot confirm the authenticity of this information considering it is based on a leaked screenshot, but we did expect to see an even more powerful Exynos-fueled smartphone released by Meizu sometime this year, and this might as well be it. We don't know if the rest of its specifications will be identical to the regular PRO 6 variant, we'll just have to wait for more info to surface, as usual, so stay tuned.
