Smartphone-addicted Chinese kid cuts off own finger with kitchen knife

We hear some very crazy stories coming out of China in relation to surgery and the latest gadgets. Usually, desperate individuals are selling their own organs in order to fund an iPhone or iPad purchase. Then there's the gaming problems, with people dying by choosing to play a game non-stop for days and then collapsing. Now we have a combination of all of these, only the makeshift surgery was carried out by an 11-year-old boy.

Smartphone-addicted children are becoming an ever more common sight. As soon as they wake up their phone is being used to check social networks, surf the web, or play games. In the case of this kid, he woke up and instantly grabbed his phone, which resulted in an argument with his mother when he wouldn't put it down. This was followed by a later argument with his father over the same problem.

Both arguments left the boy frustrated, very frustrated, but I suspect it may not have been the first time he'd had these arguments. Following the argument with his father, the boy went to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and sliced off the end of his own index finger. A rebellious act, but also one he'll likely look back on as a stupid thing to do.

The boy was rushed to hospital along with the severed part of his finger and surgeons spent 3 hours reattaching it. The surgery may end up being unsuccessful, though, as the blood vessels in an 11-year-old's finger are very fine and extremely difficult to work with. Only time will tell if the kid has been lucky and gets his full finger back.

Index fingers, although not essential to smartphone use, are one of the most heavily used digits when it comes to interacting with a touchscreen. If the surgery is unsuccessful it shouldn't stop the boy from using his smartphone, but it could make playing games or using multitouch for anything a bit more difficult.
