China's ZTE to name new management team on Tues - spokesman

HONG KONG: Chinese telecom equipment and smartphone maker ZTE Corp will announce a new management team on Tuesday, a spokesman said.

ZTE's board of directors will meet to approve the new team, and changes will be made public in a stock exchange filing on Tuesday afternoon or evening, ZTE spokesman David Dai Shu told Reuters, speaking by telephone on Monday. Dai said ZTE reshuffles management every three years, and the forthcoming changes are in line with the company's regular schedule.

ZTE has found itself subject to some of the toughest-ever U.S. government export restrictions for allegedly breaking U.S. sanctions against Iran in 2012. Last month, the U.S. government said it would ease those restrictions until the end of June and could further ease them if ZTE cooperated in "resolving the matter".

The Wall Street Journal first reported on Saturday that ZTE was lining up management changes.

The paper said Chief Executive Shi Lirong and Executive Vice Presidents Tian Wenguo and Qiu Weizhao are expected to step down, with Chief Technology Officer Zhao Xianming to take over as CEO and chairman. The WSJ said that part of ZTE's agreed cooperation with the U.S. government involved replacing executives involved with the alleged Iran sanctions breach.

ZTE spokesman Dai said he could not confirm which executives would be involved in the management changes to be announced on Tuesday, and could not comment on whether the upcoming changes were related to the alleged Iran sanctions breach in any way. "I cannot speculate on this type of discussion," he said. "I am not in a position to comment."

The company is also expected to publish its annual results for 2015 on April 7.

Smartphone sales to grow at record low in 2016

The latest report from Gartner Inc. has revealed that smartphone sales will climb at the lowest rate on record as PC sales continue to slip this year. The market research said it expects smartphone sales to grow seven per cent this year to reach 1.5 billion units, which would mark the first time that smartphone sales grew at less than 10 per cent in a year.

"The double-digit growth era for the global smartphone market has come to an end," said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner.

Atwal added that worsening economic conditions have historically had a negligible impact on smartphone sales. But that is no longer the case, he said. Smartphone sales in both North America and China are forecast to be roughly flat this year.

The total mobile phone market is forecast to reach 1.9 billion units in 2016, Gartner said.

Combined, global sales of PCs, tablets, "ultramobiles" and mobile phones are projected to reach 2.4 billion in 2016, an increase of less than one per cent from 2015, Gartner said.

Meanwhile, Gartner predicted that PC sales will decline once again in 2016. The firm projected that global PC shipments will decline 1.5 per cent to 284 million units this year, with shipments of traditional PCs on pace to decline nearly seven per cent.

Figure 1: Gartner forecasted smartphone sales to grow seven per cent this year to reach 1.5 billion units, which would mark the first time that smartphone sales grew at less than 10 per cent in a year.

The good news is that Gartner also predicts that the PC market will "bottom out" this year, returning to growth next year.

"In 2016, the PC market will reach its last year of decline before returning to growth in 2017," Atwal said. "The biggest challenge, and potential benefit for the PC market, is the integration of Windows 10 with Intel's Skylake architecture. It has the potential for new form factors with more attractive features."

Gartner also predicted that frustration with the limitations of tablets will drive some consumers and businesses to review new form factors.

"However, to draw their interest the PC manufacturers need to ensure that they meet demand with the right products at the right price," Atwal said.

5 reasons Xiaomi Mi 5 is a great deal and 5 reasons it’s not

After almost two years of wait, Xiaomi has finally launched its flagship smartphone in India. The Xiaomi Mi 5 comes at a price of Rs 24,999 and will be looking at giving a good competition to conventional flagship smartphones from Apple, Samsung, LG on one hand and to new age flagship killers from Lenovo, OnePlus on the other.

The phone was first showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016 and went on sale in China. The Xiaomi Mi 5 has been getting an outstanding response in the China market and India is the first international country to offer this smartphone. The Xiaomi Mi 5 smartphone that packs in Snapdragon 820 CPU, 3GB of RAM, a 16MP Sony sensor and a sleek design that weighs just 129g. In the China market the company is also offering a limited edition ceramic back model, which we will not be seeing in India for now.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 has a metal and glass combo for the chassis, with a seamless design that does feel really nice when sliding your finger along the sid e - it's crafted well to avoid any sharp edges. The smartphone comes with USB Type C connector. A connector that works either way up and allows for faster data transfer - plus this phone supports Quick Charge 3.0, so you'll be able to get 90% in charge in under an hour.

The front-facing camera is a 4MP affair, with pixels that are 2 microns wide - that's rather large and allows for brighter images. There is Xiaomi's Beauty Mode, which helps in touching up the pictures and putting it in Hugo Barra's words, "Make handsome men look even more handsome". We have tried this feature on some of the previous Xiaomi phones and can tell you that it is a great add on for the selfie addicts .Not to forget the first of its kind 4-axis OIS integrated into the rear camera module.

Xiaomi does try to cover main aspects in this phone by offering great horsepower, a camera to write about and not to mention the battery but it is always good to weigh every pro with an equal number of cons. So we present to you five main points that make the Xiaomi Mi 5 shine out and also five points through which we feel it has missed the bus. Read out to make a smart investment.

A 'Powerhouse' for processing and gaming

Xiaomi Mi 5 is backed by the Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 CPU, which is considered the fastest smartphone CPU of 2016 and is usually a feature of high-end pricey handsets such as LG G5, Samsung galaxy S7 (US variant) and HP Elite X3. It is not expected to be marred by the overheating issues, which made the previous Snapdragon 810 less desirable among the users around the globe.

If Snapdragon 820 takes care of your processing requirements, then the graphics department is handles by Adreno 530, which again sits at the top of the GPU's list. It is 40% faster than the previous Adreno 430 and also consuming 40% less power. The result is supreme gaming performance with less batte ry consumption.

Amazing 16MP rear camera with first time 4-Axis Optical Image Stabilisation

We recently reviewed Xiaomi Redmi Note 3's camera and found it to be best in the sub Rs 10,000 price bracket. In the past we had reviewed Mi 4, Mi 4i and other Xiaomi devices, which also showcased good imaging prowess. Coming on to Mi 5, the smartphone is equipped with a 16MP sensor from Sony IMX298 imaging sensor, with a sapphire protective glass and phase detection autofocus. What makes this camera sensor special is the 4-axis optical image stablisation, which for the first time will be seen on a smartphone. This interesting piece of imaging technology aims to reduce motion blur when shooting moving objects. It is more effective than the traditional 2-axis OIS mostly found in other flagship smartphones and will yield better results while shooting fast moving objects.

The front-facing camera is a 4MP affair, which packs in pixels that are 2 microns wide to allow more light for brighter images.

It's a beautifully crafted handset

During the launch event, we had a chance to experience the smartphone in personal. Xiaomi Mi 5 has a seamless design that does feel really nice in hands and is entirely crafted out of metal and glass. It looks premium and at the same time does not have any sharp edges to add the ergonomics. The curved design reminds us of the recent Galaxy S7 and the almost frameless display looks beautiful. The Pro variant comes with ceramic rear, which offers extra durability.

You also get a fingerprint sensor integrated on the home button at the front.

Quick charge 3.0

As the smartphone comes equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820, it takes the advantage of Quick Charge 3.0, which can be remarkably fast to charge the 3,000mAh battery unit of the handset.

Does not burn a hole in the pocket

Finally, the most important part is the pricing. While a flagship smartphone from Samsung, Apple, LG and Sony will set you back by almost Rs 50,000 and even more in some cases, the Mi 5 only asks half of it. The standard variant with 3Gb RAM and 32GB internal memory sells at Rs 24,999, which is a decent amount for the specifications and features the smartphone offers.

Where Xiaomi Mi 5 miss the spot

While there are enough reasons to like the highly praised smartphone, we found some negative aspects as well, which cannot be ignored.

No 2K display

The display is one of the things on the smartphone that do not match the flagship moniker. Xiaomi Mi 5 features a 1080p LCD IPS panel, which offers good color reproduction and contrast ratio but does not stack up against the QHD panels (Nexus 6P, Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S7,etc.) in terms of sharpness.

3GB RAM and no Pro variant for the Indian market

Xiaomi has only launched the standard variant in the Indian market, which comes with a 3GB of RAM. While, it's enough for to offer a good level of multitasking, there are options available in the market with 4GB of RAM (OnePlus 2, Asus Zenfone 2) if you don't want to compromise on multitasking.

No microSD card slot

Xiaomi Mi 5 fails to offer the convenience of a microSD card, which is one feature deeply loved by the consumers in the Indian market. The smartphone's standard addition offers only 32GB internal storage.

No removable battery

A nightmare for consumers is the fact that Xiaomi Mi 5 does not feature a removable battery. So you are restricted with a 3,000mAh battery unit for the entire lifetime of the handset.

Not weather proof

Another noted feature which gets a miss is the water and dust resistivity. Xiaomi has not equipped the MI 5 with any sort of protection that can be found even in some budget handsets these days.

As you can see, there are plenty of things to like about the new Xiaomi Mi 5 and then there are some hard reasons to give it a miss. At the end we would like to rest the decision to you whether to buy the new smartphone or consider other options in the market.

How Did Apple Increase Its Share in China’s Smartphone Market?

What Recent Trends Could Affect Apple's Performance This Year? (Part 3 of 9)

How Did Apple Increase Its Share in China's Smartphone Market? By Adam Rogers  • Apr 1, 2016 4:17 pm EDT Smartphone shipments in China grew by 8% YoY

According to IDC, 117.3 million smartphones were shipped to China (FXI) in 4Q15, representing an 8% YoY (year-over-year) growth. Huawei led China's smartphone market in 4Q15 with a share of 15.2% compared to 10.9% in 4Q14. Apple (AAPL) was in second place with a share of 14.6% in 4Q15 compared to 13.5% in 4Q14. Huawei, Apple, and Xiaomi were the top players in 4Q15 in China (EWY). The top players in 2013 were Samsung (SSNLF), Lenovo (LNVGY), and Coolpad.

"Xiaomi entered the market at a time when the China smartphone market was still growing, and was able to capture a significant market share with its disruptive sales model. Huawei, with its investments in R&D, strong products, branding and channel connections, saw it having significant growth in 2015. Apple, on the other hand, continues to be a strong and desirable brand in the eyes of the Chinese consumers. With the Chinese market now slowing down, it is unlikely that we will see any new players making a big impact on the smartphone market compared to the way Xiaomi did in the previous years," stated Tay Xiaohan, senior market analyst with IDC.

Huawei's market share increased significantly in 4Q15

As seen in the above chart, Huawei's YoY growth stood at 50.8%. This figure for Apple and Xiaomi were 16.8% and 15.3%, respectively, in 4Q15. OPPO, another Chinese player, also saw its market share grow by 53.3% in 4Q15 to 10% from 7% in 4Q14.

Huawei sees 33% increase in net profit on rising sales of smartphones, network gear

Huawei posted a 33 percent increase in net profit in 2015 over the previous year thanks to soaring smartphone sales and increasing demand for 4G network gear.

The Chinese vendor said revenues increased 37 percent year-over-year in 2015 to $60.8 billion, and net profit came in at $5.7 billion. Gross margin fell to 41.7 percent, though, down 2.5 percent from the prior year, due to increased investment in research and development.

Huawei said in December that it shipped more than 100 million smartphones in 2015 as its strategy to push into foreign markets with mid-range and high-end handsets paid dividends. Huawei emerged as the world's third-largest smartphone vendor last year behind Samsung and Apple.

The company's recent success in smartphones is particularly striking because worldwide smartphone sales slowed in 2015 as major markets including China, the U.S. and Western Europe reach saturation. The global slowdown has been particularly difficult for some vendors in China, where the market is flooded with low-end and mid-range Android phones.

Smartphones and other consumer devices were Huawei's fastest-growing segment, increasing 73 percent to nearly $20 billion. And the company said "widespread rollout of 4G networks" played a major role in its information and communications technologies (ICT) revenues.

As the worldwide smartphone market continues slowing and emerging markets begin to mature, Huawei may have to depend more on those ICT revenues than on its smartphone business. And the emergence of 5G technologies will surely provide plenty of opportunities to do so over the next several years.

"In part, Huawei owes its long-term growth to the sheer size of the ICT market, which is the driving force of digital economies around the world," said Guo Ping, Huawei's deputy chairman and rotating CEO, in a prepared statement. "However, our growth is also a direct result of strategic focus and heavy investment in our core businesses. Over the next three to five years, we will concentrate on enhancing connectivity, enabling the development of vertical industries, and redefining network capabilities."

Whether Huawei can gain any real traction in the U.S. mobile market, though, is still unclear. National security concerns have long forestalled the company's efforts to sell network gear to U.S. carriers, and very few U.S. carriers sell Huawei phones to their customers. But the company hopes that factors such as market consolidation and changing views on network security will provide an opening.
