Apple regains crown as China's most popular smartphone maker

While the likes of Huawei and Xiaomi are enormously successful within China, their presence in western markets remains minimal. Huawei launched its budget Honor 5X handset in Europe last week, in a bid to persuade consumers to switch from entry-level Samsung models.

Apple is rumoured to be gearing up to launch a new cheaper iPhone, the 5se, at an event on March 15.

The new handset is expected to sport new features including  an upgraded camera, Apple Pay and Live Photos, catering to customers who may remain unconvinced by the larger 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays introduced with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in September 2014.

Depending on its price tag, it could also stand to help Apple gain market share at the more affordable end of the sector, although Apple executive  Greg Joswiak has said in the past that Apple has no intention  of competing with Android in the low-end device market.
