Shrinking smartphone sales doesn't worry Xiaomi

By Catherine Cadell

Sharp drops in smartphone sales for China's Xiaomi Inc will not have a major impact on the company as profit growth will be driven by sales from smart home devices as well as revenue from its software eco-system, a senior executive said.

Xiaomi was valued at $46 billion in its last fund-raising in 2014 - making it briefly the world's most valuable start-up at a time when it was China's best-selling smartphone maker and looked set to make a splash worldwide.

But last year it missed its global smartphone targets by 12 percent, while its third-quarter China smartphone sales have tumbled 45 percent, according to research firm IDC - raising doubts that the valuation is still warranted.

Xiaomi's global vice-president Hugo Barra said the company's business model was not based on money made from handset sales per se and that it did not need to raise more funds or see any point in doing so at a valuation of less than $46 billion.

"Basically we're giving [handsets] to you without making any money... we care about the recurring revenue streams over many years," he told Reuters in an interview.

"We could sell 10 billion smartphones and we wouldn't make a single dime in profits," he added.

Xiaomi, which discloses little of its profit and revenue figures, has increasingly emphasised its range of home appliances such as air and water purifiers, and rice cookers as key earnings drivers.

In April, Xiaomi Vice President Liu De said the firm expects sales of smart home devices to double to 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) this year.

The company has invested heavily in India and Southeast Asia and is making its first forays into the U.S. market - launching next month its first device capable of roaming on the country's 4G networks.

Barra said they are first targeting Chinese users travelling in the U.S., but are laying the groundwork for direct sales to U.S. consumers.

In January, Xiaomi will also make its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, launching a new product during the event, he said.

Xiaomi's tentative first steps in the U.S. smartphone market come as cash-strapped rival LeEco faces a crippling shortage of funds, which were revealed in a public letter by CEO Jia Yueting months after the company launched its first flagship phones in the United States.

"There's no pressing need to do an IPO or even a private round," said Barra brushing off concerns that Xiaomi could face a similar funding shortage. "We are not a flash in someone's PR pan."

Apple dominated 91% smartphone profits worldwide in Q3, but lost to Oppo, Vivo in China

Apple has taken the Lion's share of Q3 smartphone profits globally but loses the steam in China to Oppo and Vivo. While Samsung takes $5 billion hit to end Galaxy Note 7 fiasco.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) might just have had another blockbuster quarter what with research firm Strategy Analytics pegging the Cupertino company's share of the Q3 mobile industry profit at an astounding 91 percent. The report further claimed the total profit for the mobile industry as a whole during the same period at $9.4 billion.

That makes $8.5 billion in profit for Apple from proceeds from its entire mobile business, which includes sales of hardware as well as services. The above figure does tally with what Apple revealed officially – an operating profit of $9 billion from $46.9 billion in revenue that it earned during the period from July through September. Apple though has been expecting slightly higher revenue of $46.94 billion.

Apple, during the conference call also added it sold 45.5 million iPhones along with 9.2 million units of the iPad and 4.8 million Macs during the third quarter. CEO Tim Cook also thanked consumers for their strong response to the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus as well as the Apple Watch Series 2.

$250 Best Buy gift card with purchase of any iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

However, the iPhone 7 sales might just have had a marginal effect on the company's Q3 figures since it went on sale late during the quarter. So much of it had to do with the sale of iPhone 6s even though the sale of the iPhone 7 predecessor had slowed down considerably during the time in anticipation of new iPhones.

Experts attributed Apple's strong performance to their exceptional ability to maximize profits while keeping production costs to a minimum. That is not all as Apple reported strong performance of the Services sector that too reported an impressive growth of 24 percent.

However, while all of the above should be enough to bring cheers to the company, it does have to contend with a few aspects that are adding to its worries. Take for instance the 30 percent plunge that its operations in China reported. The company though put up a brave face and said it still is optimistic of returning back to favor in China. Apple also stated devaluation in currency also had an adverse effect on its profits from China.

Meanwhile, Huawei came in at the second spot, having secured 2.4 percent of the mobile industry profits. This is the first time it has been ranked this high with domestic competitors Vivo and Oppo taking up the third and fourth slots with 2.2 percent profit each.

The rise of the Chinese companies has been at the expense of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: SSNLF) that is having to stomach a massive $5 billion in losses thanks to the infamous Note 7 failure. Another reason that led to the surprise growth of brands like Oppo and Vivo is the higher commission they have been doling out to the sellers.

The commission varies from $40 yuan to 200 yuan depending on the cost of the handset, which is reason enough for the sellers to promote such brands. Both Vivo and Oppo also targeted the rural and far flung areas to push sales of their handsets. This is in stark contrast to the urban areas where Apple or even domestic competitor Xiaomi largely operates in.

Upgraded ZTE Axon 7 with Force Touch Display & 6GB RAM Launched in the U.S at $499

In the first half of 2016, ZTE has launched the flagship smartphone Axon 7 in China. Unlike many other Chinese smartphone brands, ZTE had some decent market presence in the Western markets. Even the Axon 7 was made available in the U.S and European markets. Unlike in China, the company has launched only the 4GB variant of the Axon 7 in the U.S priced at $399 (approx Rs. 27,200). Almost six months after launching the Axon 7, now the company has launched the 6GB RAM variant of the Axon 7 in the U.S. This new variant comes with a price tag of $499 (approx Rs. 34,000) and is already on sale through the company's official website.

Apart from the change in few specifications, the design looks completely same as the 4GB RAM variant. The 5.5-inch AMOLED display with Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution now supports Force Touch. This works same as the 3D Touch on the new iPhones. Even before to the last year's iPhone 6S and 6S Plus; ZTE Axon Mini is the world's first smartphone to feature a pressure sensitive display. Talking about the new Axon 7, it is now protected by Gorilla Glass 5 instead of last gen Gorilla Glass 4. Even the storage is now bumped up from 64GB to 128GB on this new device. Apart from these changes, rest of the specifications remains same as earlier.

It is powered by the Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor coupled with Adreno 530 GPU. The device runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow based MiFavor UI 4.0. The 128GB of internal storage can be further expanded with the use of MicroSD card slot. The device supports dual SIM dual standby with the help of hybrid SIM slot where the user can opt either for a secondary SIM or a MicroSD card. The Axon 7 sports a 20MP rear camera with f/1.8 aperture, PDAF, OIS, and EIS. For selfies, it has an 8MP camera with f/1.8 aperture that can also record videos in Full HD resolution. It also offers Hi-Fi audio output with the dedicated AK4961 and AK4490 audio chips and front facing stereo speakers.

With all these power hungry specifications, the device comes with a 3,250mAh battery and Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging support. Earlier to the Axon 7, the OnePlus 3 is the only smartphone to be launched in the U.S with 6GB of RAM. Even, OnePlus also launched the upgraded OnePlus 3T smartphone using the new Snapdragon 821 SoC. Last month, ZTE launched the Axon 7 Max smartphone with dual camera setup. It sports a large 6-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) display and is powered by the mid-range Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz. The Axon 7 Max includes 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage along with MicroSD card slot.

On the back, it sports dual 13MP sensors with laser autofocus and dual tone LED flash. While the front camera remains same as on the Axon 7 with 8MP sensor. Compared to Axon 7, the Axon 7 Max also comes with a larger 4,100mAh battery but supports only Quick Charge 2.0. There are dual AK4962 dedicated Hi-Fi audio chip for better audio output. According to the company, the device supports 3D viewing out of the box without any additional accessories. It is currently retailing at 2999 Yuan (approx $435 / Rs. 29,700) in China.

Xiaomi Mi 5c Price Leak; ‘Meri’ Smartphone with 5.5-inch Display, 3 GB RAM Coming in December

The latest leak suggests that Xiaomi will release another affordable device in December.

Xiaomi Mi 5c to rock in-house processor under the hood

Xiaomi is not over with the smartphone shower as the Apple of China is reportedly gearing up for another affordable device launch in Dec. 12. If rumors are true, then the Mi 5c will be the first Xiaomi phone to get the in-house chip under the hood.

The source of the recent leak came from Chinese micro-blogging site, Weibo, after a user spilled out details about the tech specs of what's believed to be the Mi 5c. Dubbed as Xiaomi Meri, the device will rock an in-house processor codenamed Pine Cone. A leak at Geekbench shows that the chip is an octa-core processor clocking at 1.4GHz.

The rumors about Xiaomi developing its own processor have been around for awhile. At first, The in-house processor was said to compete with Qualcomm Snapdragon. However, given the benchmark score, it is safe to argue that the chipset performance is slightly lower than Qualcomm's.

Tech analysts have speculated that Xiaomi's chipset will be facing fierce competition against Kirin from Huawei and Samsung's 'signature' chip, Exynos.

Xiaomi Mi 5c technical specifications

It is reported that Xiaomi Meri will be launched in three colors: Black, Gold and Rose Gold, according to Android Headlines. Mi 5c will use MIUI 8 interface on top of the Android Marshmallow.

There is no word about internal storage but Xiaomi is rumored to equip Mi 5c with a spacious 3 GB RAM. The 5.5-inch smartphone packs full HD display with 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution and 403 ppi pixel density. Other leaked feature includes NFC support.

Xiaomi Mi 5c price leaked

The leak also mentions about CNY 1,499 pricetag as reported by NDTV. This means, Xiaomi Meri will sell for about $217. Source: universityherald

While the device is expected to come with a similar design but with a little smaller display, sporting a 5.5-inch display, this may be a Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution. the device uses Snapdragon 821 quad-core processor along with Adreno 530 GPU.

The larger Mi MIX with 6GB RAM comes with  128GB and 256GB storage options and the Xiaomi Mi MIX Nano comes with just 4GB RAM with 64GB internal storage. The 18 karat gold rings around the rear camera and fingerprint sensor make the device unique with the 256 GB storage for the Mi MIX and run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Chinese MIUI 8 on top. No Google apps for the device that is only available in China

Presently there is no confirmation on this as yet from the company. The almost bezel-less display on three edges, the device skips the proximity sensor and earpiece on the top. Xiaomi Mi MIX instead features a piezoelectric acoustic ceramic earpiece speaker with the ultrasonic proximity sensor. The Mi MIX comes with a 16MP main / rear camera with PDAF and f/2.0 aperture. For capturing selfies, the front camera is 5MP fixed-focus.

The powerful 4,400mAh battery is non-removable which supports Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging technology. This super sleek design phone Xiaomi is available only in China. There too there are limits as the company announced per month only around 10,000 units will be on sale. If the Mi MIX Nano is an unrestricted availability, the ceramic body may miss out as it is tough to produce on a larger scale.

Chinese makers lead smartphone growth

The survey by Gartner Inc. showed that in the third quarter, three Chinese vendors -- Huawei, Oppo and BBK Communication Equipment -- together accounted for 21 percent of the smartphones sold worldwide, and were the only vendors in the top five to increase sales.

"Sales of smartphones in China grew by 12.4 percent, and the vendors who most successfully exploited the sales opportunities there were Oppo and BBK," said Gartner analyst Anshul Gupta. "In Oppo's case, 81 percent of its smartphone sales came from China, while BBK accounted for 89 percent of smartphones sales in China. These two vendors also grew strongly in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Russia."

Gartner's survey confirmed other reports showing Samsung and Apple at the top of the global market but with slipping sales. The research firm said Samsung's market share dropped to 19.2 percent amid the fiasco over its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, which were recalled and then halted after overheating batteries leading to fires. "The decision to withdraw the Galaxy Note 7 was correct, but the damage to Samsung's brand will make it harder for the company to increase its smartphone sales in the short term," said Gupta. "For Samsung, it's crucial that the Galaxy S8 launches successfully so that partners and customers regain trust in its brand."

Apple's share dropped to 11.5 percent as the iPhone maker failed to get much benefit from Samsung's woes, Gartner said. "The withdrawal of Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 may benefit sales of Apple's iPhone 7 Plus only slightly, as Note 7 users are likely to stay with Samsung or at least with Android," said Gartner's Roberta Cozza. "To some extent, other Android vendors could capitalise on this situation in the short term -- for example, Huawei and other Chinese brands present in the premium Android phone segment."

Cozza said the Samsung problems could also benefit Google, which recently introduced its Pixel and Pixel XL devices. Gartner said overall smartphone sales in the quarter rose 5.4 percent to 373 million units.

Smartphone maker Blu is been secretly sending your text messages to China

Blu is well known for providing affordable unlocked handsets with moderate hardware across the US and Latin America. Now there is news that the US-based security Kryptowire has discovered firmware in the Blu phones that beamed across the user's text messages, call history and contact lists and sends this device information to the server in Shanghai, China without the permission or knowledge of the user.

The report also said that it also allowed for remotely installing applications on the device and collects the location data. All this happened when Blu used a third party application to roll their OTA updates to its users who are from a Chinese company called Shanghai Adups Technology which also claims that ZTE and Huawei are among its big clients.

Adups Technology uses tools to collect data from users Phone and sends it back to its servers for the customer support to identify the messages and calls. It has developed this custom software for a separate Chinese device manufacturer, and Blu has picked up the same to roll out its update to its handsets in the US.

It is also said that around 1,20,000 handsets are affected by this and Blu has told that it was not aware of this issue until it was reported by Kryptowire. Blu has also claimed that it has identified the software and removed it and stated to New York Times that Adups assured to destroy all the data which got collected.

With this incident, Blu will lose its reputation that it has been building from few years. We need to see how many will discontinue using the handsets from Blu and how many will be retaining them. Recently Blu announced Blu Studio XL 2 smartphone with a 6-inch display and before that there were devices like Blu Studio G Plus, Blu Vivo 6 and Blu Studio G Max.

The Blu Studio XL 2 is powered by a MediaTek MT6737 Quad-core processor clocked at 1.3 GHz that is coupled with Mali 720 GPU and 2GB RAM. There is a 13-megapixel Camera with f/2.2 aperture, Autofocus, and Dual LED Flash which is can recording videos at 1080p resolution at 30 frames per seconds. On the front, there is a 5-megapixel camera with LED Flash to enhance the video calling and selfies. Moreover, there is a 4900 mAh battery on the back which is non-removable which will give 72 hours of standard usage and 30 days on standby.

Well, do you use any of the handsets from Blu? Did you update it any recently? Comment in the section below and stay tuned to Phoneradar for more.

Android 7.0 Nougat Update for ZTE Axon 7 Release Date Revealed

We don't really care much about Chinese-made devices getting the platform updated but this is ZTE AXON 7, a model that boasts of high-end specs but with mid-range pricing and has since reached the United States last July in time for Summer.

Samsung, the world's largest smartphone marker, does not have any phones available on the market, which would run Google's latest Android 7.0 Nougat operating system. Except Nexus, Pixel mobiles and LG no other company has released the Android 7.0 Nougat update till date. There are speculations that OnePlus is going to release Android Nougat Update to the high end OnePlus 3 in December but we don't have an exact information about the OnePlus 3 Android 7.0 Nougat Update. The Android 7.0 Nougat update for the ZTE Axon 7 has been confirmed by the manufacturer's german branch on its official Twitter account. There's no telling exactly what ZTE will be putting inside its interpretation of Nougat yet. As you likely know if you're reading this, ZTE has been pushing a few updates lately, but the delayed rollout of Nougat is sure to disappoint more than a few folks. Both the front and rear cameras are capable of shooting in full HD resolution according to the listing. ZTE Axon 7 includes h ardware such as a 5.5-inch AMOLED display running at 1440 by 2560 pixels, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of integrated storage.

These are all the details revealed at GFXBench, but we suspect ZTE's Nougat-powered smartphone will make headlines again in the next couple of weeks. But expect a China launch soon.

iPhone 7 Plus explodes in China after an accidental fall on the ground

After the Galaxy Note 7 recall, the smartphone explosion scenario has been quite for some time now. We haven't heard about any new smartphone explosions apart from a few incidents which are reported to be fake. Not that it is a bad thing by any means since the smartphone explosions are the last thing which we want. However, we have some new reports which claim that an iPhone 7 Plus has exploded now in China. Yes, it looks like the explosions have not stopped after all.

According to the source, this iPhone 7 Plus exploded in Yunnan province, Southwest China after an accidental fall on the ground. It is also reported that it was purchased recently and upon hitting the ground, it started emitting smoke and severe vibrations. After some time the smartphone's screen was shattered completely, and it was detached from the body. Well, if you take a look at the images from the source, then probably can figure out that it is beyond repair since the extent of damage is beyond imagination. It is expected that the battery would have exploded due to the impact of the drop.

Either way, we don't have any info on what Apple has to say on this. All these new explosions only add up to a total number of mishaps that took place till now. Previously, there have been two explosions cases around the iPhone 7 where the phones exploded miserably. Although these are very rare cases that we are seeing here, but still it is something to keep an eye on. Even the Note 7 explosions started slowly, and now we don't have Note 7 smartphones anymore. This doesn't mean that the iPhones are also a danger to the world, but users should be more careful while using them and proceed with caution.

Last month also an iPhone 7 was exploded while taking it out of the box and the other one exploded in Australia which almost burnt down a car. And also, this is not just limited to iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, but we have also seen similar cases with iPhone 6 and 6s as well. And interestingly, we don't have any kind of response from Apple on this. The reason for that is maybe these are still very rare scenarios and probably a detailed statement can be expected from them if we see more similar cases in future.

With an increase in the number of these smartphone explosions, it is definitely a matter of concern now among the consumers. Apart from checking the specs and features of a smartphone before buying them, people are now waiting to see if there are any reports of the smartphones exploding or not. Well, at this point, let's just hope this is the last one we hear and if in case more happens, then should at least get an official statement from Apple. Stay tuned for more info on this as we will update once we have more info on this.

Lenovo to Launch Moto C & new Moto X Smartphones in 2017

Recently Lenovo has launched the all new Moto M smartphone in China. It is the second smartphone next to the Moto E3 Power to come with MediaTek processor. With this device, the company has started injecting bloatware apps into Moto devices which are known for offering stock Android experience with zero bloatware apps. Even the recent rumors suggest Lenovo to integrated its brand into Moto making it the face of Lenovo brand in the smartphone business. Last year Lenovo also introduced the online exclusive ZUK brand in China to compete against the other online exclusive brands including Xiaomi and OnePlus.

ZUK was introduced as the Lenovo ZUK in India, and the company has already launched two smartphones ZUK Z1 and ZUK Z2 Plus. Though the ZUK series is expected to be continued, the future of the Vibe and K series is not yet known. We can confirm all these only when there is an official statement from the company. Today, we got some interesting information about the upcoming Moto smartphones in 2017. The leaked roadmap revealed a bunch of smartphones that will be launched in 2017. The Moto Z and Moto M along with affordable smartphone series like Moto G and Moto E will meet their successors in 2017. Somehow, the company is bringing back the Moto X devices in 2017 after a year break.

In the coming new year, we will also see the all new Moto C series. From wild predictions, the Lenovo CPlus concept smartphone that was showcased at the Lenovo Tech World in June this year might be coming under Moto C series. It is a bendable device that wraps around the wrist and sports flexible display. Samsung is also said to be working on a bendable/flexible smartphone and might be launched in 2017 itself. Out of all Moto devices launching 2017, manufacturing of only Moto Z 2017 smartphones will be completely handled by the Motorola Mobility, while both Motorola Mobility and Lenovo teams will jointly work on Moto G 2017 devices.

Rest of the devices, including the newly launched Moto M and the upcoming Moto C, will be handled by the Lenovo team. Though all the upcoming Lenovo devices will be launched under  Moto brand, they can't give the same feel as the Moto devices that are launched till date. After purchasing the Motorola brand from Google, Lenovo ended up with lots of smartphones coming from its in-house brands like Lenovo, Motorola, and ZUK. A year old, ZUK has launched only three smartphones till date, since the Z2 Plus is the same ZUK Z2 that was launched in China. On the other hand, many of the Lenovo and Motorola smartphone are competing against each other.

As per the rumors, Lenovo will be launching only the Moto and ZUK smartphones in 2017. We will be updating the article once there is any confirmation from the Lenovo. While Motorola skipped launching the Moto 360 smartwatch in 2016, few rumors suggest the company to lend out its brand name for third party manufacturer. There isn't much penetration of smartwatches in the market while the initial estimations are much higher than the current numbers.

China’s Patent-Lawsuit Profile Grows

Updated Nov. 7, 2016 7:47 p.m. ET

HONG KONG—When a Canadian patent-licensing firm wanted to sue Japanese electronics company Sony Corp., it chose an unlikely venue: China.

Ottawa-based WiLAN Inc., which earns revenue by licensing its patents, filed a suit against Sony last week in a court in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing, alleging that the Japanese company's smartphones violated its wireless-communication-technology patent, according to the filing reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

WiLAN's lawsuit is a rare case of a foreign patent-holding entity suing a non-Chinese company in China. It is an indication of how China is becoming a more attractive place to seek legal action for companies that accumulate patents for litigation and licensing purposes. In China, lawsuits are less time-consuming and less costly than in the U.S. and the country's courts have developed rapidly over the past several years. If an injunction is granted in China, it wouldn't only apply to products sold i n the country using the patent in question, but also to the exports of such goods made in China, giving the plaintiff a possible bargaining tool for a licensing deal.

While China accounts for a small part of Sony's revenue, the Tokyo-based company makes many of its electronic products, including batteries, smartphones and television sets, in the country. A Sony spokeswoman declined to comment on the lawsuit, saying that the company can't discuss a continuing legal dispute.

WiLAN's lawsuit, filed through its subsidiary, alleges that some of Sony's smartphones have infringed on a patent related to the fourth-generation wireless-network-technology standard known as long-term evolution, or LTE.

WiLAN has entered into licensing deals with numerous technology companies around the world. For example, it has recently signed agreements with Mitsubishi Electric Corp. of Japan and ZTE Corp. of China that cover industrial-automation and wireless technology, respec tively, according to WiLAN's website.

The Canadian company's goal is to reach a licensing deal with Sony, said Erick Robinson, a China-based attorney at patent law firm Rouse, which is advising WiLAN in the Sony case.

"Three or four years ago, I wouldn't have advised any foreign company to file a patent lawsuit in China," because the country lacked an effective system for enforcing intellectual-property rights, Mr. Robinson said. In September, WiLAN filed a similar patent lawsuit against Sony in Germany. That lawsuit is pending trial.

Traditionally, the U.S. has been the global hub for such lawsuits, but in recent years, patent-licensing firms are looking for new places to bring lawsuits, lawyers and legal scholars say. While Germany is already becoming a popular venue for patent lawsuits because of its sophisticated and efficient court procedures, some potential litigants are also starting to consider filing their cases in China.

"This is pa rt of a world-wide phenomenon right now," said Joe Siino, president of San Francisco-based Via Licensing Corp., a Dolby Laboratories Inc. unit specializing in patent management and licensing.

The rapid progress in China is driven by Beijing's desire to promote homegrown technologies with the aim to protect the increasing number of patents Chinese companies own. Some of China's biggest technology companies, such as telecommunications-equipment makers Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE, have already built up extensive patent portfolios. The number of Chinese patents issued in 2015 jumped 54% to 359,000, according to the State Intellectual Property Office.

While granting more patents, the Chinese government has also strengthened its patent laws in recent years and created courts that specialize in IP disputes.

For foreign technology companies that have already faced challenges in China because of stiff competition, this could mean additional legal challenges, lawyers say.

Chinese patent-holders are also taking advantage of the system. In May, Beijing's IP regulator ordered Apple Inc. to stop the sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the city, ruling in favor of Shenzhen Baili Marketing Services Co. A shell company owned by defunct Chinese smartphone maker Digione, it had filed complaints alleging that the U.S. company infringed on its design patents.

The injunction hasn't been implemented because Apple has appealed.

Ten years ago, eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) lost the battle to conquer China's e-commerce market to small upstart Alibaba (NYSE:BABA). Ten years on, China's e-commerce market has grown more than tenfold, and Alibaba has become a global conglomerate with its arms stretching across multiple disciplines such as payments, big data, Hollywood and more.

The game of e-commerce has also changed. With proliferating smartphones, e-commerce has become increasingly mobile. Euromonitor estimates that mobile commerce will amount to $972 billion by the end of this year. By 2021, mobile payments are expected to reach $3 trillion.

This is an area where American companies are falling behind. There is no clear market leader in the U.S. mobile payments industry. Apple Pay (NASDAQ:AAPL) may be the closest to being a leading player. PayPal is playing catch-up in mobile transactions. Their positions, however, may soon be challenged by Alipay, China's largest mobile payment service provider with 450 million users.

Alipay, originally created by Alibaba, and now a part of Ant Financial, is rapidly expanding its mobile payment service to Asia, Europe and now, to the United States. On October 24, it announced partnerships with payment processors First Data (NYSE:FDC) and Verifone (NYSE:PAY) as its official entry to the U.S. market.

The speed of Alipay's global outreach is breathtaking. Last month alone, more than 80,000 retailers in 70 countries signed up with the mobile payment system, and so did 10 international airports including Munich, Tokyo and Aukland. As the latest development, this past Friday DFS Group inked a deal with Ant Financial to launch Alipay at San Francisco International Airport.

Alipay's strategy is to target Chinese overseas tourists who have already become accustomed to using its mobile app back home. Last year, more than 120 million Chinese traveled abroad and spent nearly $200 billion.

Retailers around the world are also eager to embrace Alipay in order to court Chinese spenders. Alipay is now accepted at British luxury department stores Harrods and Selfridges. Before long, it will be at Macy's (NYSE:M) or Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN).

What's alarming is that Alipay seems to have no contenders. Apple Pay, PayPal, or any other U.S. payment service provider, powerlessly watched Alipay's whirlwind foray around the world and into the U.S. market without making any attempt to combat it. Their lack of action presents a startling contrast to Alipay's breakneck development.

Is Alipay only for Chinese tourists? I doubt it. Once it is widely accepted as a payment method in the U.S., Alipay will be in a position to challenge Apple Pay and PayPal. Currently, Alipay has already become popular in South Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan and Germany.

Ten years ago, Alibaba fought eBay cleverly and drove it out of China. Although eBay failed, it at least fought a fierce battle. This time around, however, Apple Pay and PayPal seem to have left the door wide open for Alipay to enter their home turf without even putting up a fight.

Mobile payments are the future. According to Euromonitor, by 2020, 46% of Americans will make purchases via mobile phones, compared to only 15% in 2015. If Apple Pay, PayPal, or any American payment company, wants to be relevant in the $3 trillion global mobile payments market, they must up their game and fast.

Only 12% of smartphones shipped last quarter ran iOS

161010-iphone-7-review-malaysia-09

According to market researcher Strategy Analytics, Apple's iOS lost ground last quarter as their market share for smartphones shipped in Q3 2016 dipped 1.5% to 12.1% compared to the year before. That means only a little more than 1 in every 10 smartphones shipped were iPhones.

In a press release, Strategy Analytics revealed that although the global smartphone market grew 6% annually, the biggest winner was Android, who captured 87.5% of the market share last quarter. That's a growth of 3.4% annually.

Strategy Analytics director Woody Oh attributes a lot of this success to Androids low-cost services and user-friendly software which remain attractive to hardware makers, operators and consumers worldwide. Unfortunately, things aren't so cut and dry for the little green robot.

One of their big challenges still comes in the form of the fact that the platform is "overcrowded with hundreds of manufacturers", few of which actually turn a profit.

To make matters worse, Google's recent smartphone launch — the Google Pixel and Pixel XL — is an attack on the very hardware partners that made Android popular in the first place. Not only do they have to compete with other operating systems, they also have to compete with themselves.

Still, the fact that the total number of Android devices shipped grew by 10% year-on-year, compared to iOS' drop of 5.2%  (due to "lackluster performance" in China and Africa), is positive news for Google's operating system.

What about BlackBerry and Windows Phone, you ask? Well, according to Strategy Analytics, these two operating systems have "all but disappeared" from the market.

Toddler in China killed while mother checks her phone

Social media users in China have expressed outrage after the emergence of a video clip of a toddler run over and killed by an SUV driver while her mother was too distracted by her smartphone to notice.

The CCTV footage, shared widely online, captured the horrific moment when the toddler was hit and run over by the car while her mother walked behind the girl, engrossed by her phone.

The girl reportedly died at the scene.

The death of the girl, referred to as Tutu by Chinese media, has sparked anger and sadness in China, as well as pronouncements about the nation's obsession with social media and technology.

Even a local government agency had weighed in to the debate, urging people to cut back on smartphone use.

"Heart-wrenching! Put down your phone. Save the children!," the Shandong provincial prosecutor's office wrote on Weibo, the equivalent of Twitter in China.

"If the mobile phone was so much fun, then why had you given birth to the child?" asked web user "Xiaodingdangmaimaijimiqiu".

"It is a bloody lesson. Everyone should be alerted not to play with a smartphone while walking. God knows how regretful the mother is," a netizen in the username of "freeermiao" wrote on China's twitter-like microblog Weibo.

The tragedy comes only six months after a similar incident in east China's Anhui province in which a two-year-old boy ran on to a road while his mother was on her mobile phone, was hit and killed by a car.

In August, 2015, a a boy was hit and killed by a car in a parking building while his mother was checking her phone.

The New York Times reported  that Chinese have documented and publicised the risks of calling or texting while driving.

In 2014, Shanghai police said that calling or texting while driving had caused nearly 30 per cent of the 690 fatal automobile accidents between January and October of that year, the paper noted.

The city's police installed high-definition traffic cameras to identify motorists who use smartphones while driving, with offenders fined 200 renminbi, or around $A39, and penalised through a points system.
