Why Stephen Curry Is Plugging a Chinese Smartphone

NBA superstar Stephen Curry has appeared in a lot of commercials, including one for the Apple iPhone back in 2015. Now the Golden State Warriors guard is plugging a smartphone brand you probably haven't heard of: China's Vivo. In a print ad from Fred & Farid Shanghai, Mr. Curry trades his basketball for a Vivo Xplay 6.

Vivo and Oppo, a sister smartphone brand, are seeing astonishing growth, despite their low profile in well-developed Western markets. Their rise is a worry for Samsung and Apple because they're pushing so swiftly into Asian countries where fast-growing middle classes will power future growth for brands. Globally, Samsung and Apple were the No. 1 and 2 smartphone players in 2016, but they both shipped fewer phones compared to 2015, IDC says. Compare that to Oppo and Vivo, the world's No. 4 and 5 smartphone players, which more than doubled their shipments in 2016.

Both offer high-quality phones at an affordable price, both have incentivized sales reps at far-flung mobile stores, and both have waged a marketing blitz in China, India and other countries across Asia.

"They are out-marketing rivals such as Samsung in many markets," said Neil Shah, research director at Counterpoint Research. He's based in India, where Oppo hired Bollywood star Deepika Padukone and Vivo went with actor Ranvir Singh. Mr. Shah, who tallied up the brands' sports deals, added that he's "seen lots of trains completely painted or postered with Oppo or Vivo in India."

Vivo has a deal with the NBA in China; commercials featuring Mr. Curry will air in China and the Philippines too. Oppo signed a $167 million sponsorship of the Indian national cricket team for the next five years. It also has a deal with European soccer club FC Barcelona designed to target the team's millions of fans in Indonesia, the world's fourth-most-populous country.

Both brands have made big pushes in countries across Southeast Asia. On a trip to Myanmar, Ad Age spotted unexpected Vivo and Oppo logos deep in the countryside.

Vivo and Oppo were each founded by billionaire Duan Yongping, though they compete against each other. Oppo, launched in 2005, and Vivo, in 2009, have upped their game with high-end specs, challenging perceptions of Chinese brands being low quality.

Vivo chose Mr. Curry "to upgrade its image in China, to go more premium with an international touch," said Feng Huang, partner and executive creative director of Fred & Farid Shanghai.

In China, the world's biggest smartphone market, competition is cutthroat. Vivo boosted its measured media spend there by nearly 118% in 2016 to reach $205 million, according to CTR Media Intelligence; that measure doesn't include things like digital or sponsorships, where the brand spends heavily. Oppo's measured spend was up 54% to $147 million.

Paying out is paying off: In China, Oppo and Vivo were the No. 1 and 3 smartphone players by shipments in 2016, while another local brand, Huawei, was No. 2, according to IDC. In China, all of them have surpassed Apple and Samsung.

Vivo's partnership with Mr. Curry also includes a special edition phone with a blue and yellow body, his team colors. He is plugging that on his social channels in China, giving one away with his signature on the back. Recently, though, a young Chinese fan won an even more personal present from Mr. Curry. He packed up a pair of worn Under Armour sneakers and had them delivered to a young female fan named Jiaying at the basketball court of her high school in Shanghai. In a scene shot for social media, she was delighted and immediately put them on.

Huawei Dual Camera Smartphones Dominating Chinese Market

blackview deal Share49 Tweet +1 Share Pin Shares 49

It looks like dual camera systems are the killer feature of high-end smartphones this year and one of the companies that popularized the feature, Huawei, is clearly taking the lead in China when it comes to devices featuring dual rear cameras alongside its Honor sub-brand.

According to big data service provider Aurora, 3.2% of the overall smartphone market during the first quarter of 2017 consisted of devices with dual rear camera systems. And Huawei and its Honor sub brand dominated the dual rear camera category during that time.

In Aurora's top 15 list of smartphones with dual rear camera systems, Huawei and Honor took nine out of the ten Top 10 spots. Specifically, Huawei and Honor devices placed 1st to 6th as well as 9th and 10th with Xiaomi's 5S Plus taking the 7th spot on the list.

Specifically, the Huawei P9, Huawei Mate 9, Honor 8, Honor Play 6X, Honor V8, Huawei P9 Plus, Huawei Mate 9 Pro, and the Honor 6 Plus took nine out of the ten spots.

But Huawei might not be able to hold these spots for long as more and more smartphones with dual rear cameras enter the market in the next few months until the end of the year. Companies like Xiaomi, Apple, LG, and more are set to release their dual rear camera-equipped flagships this year.

Nexus 5X Gets an Extra 2GB of RAM Upgrade for $60 in China

One of the most important things that customers look for in a smartphone is RAM capacity, especially in a market where an extra 1GB of RAM makes a big difference. Some phone makers, like Samsung, go as far as releasing variants of their flagship smartphones, with more RAM in certain countries.

However, local Chinese companies have found a solution for people who are keen on their phones, and don't want to exchange them just because they have low RAM capacity. For $60, a company from China managed to add 2GB of RAM to XDA member Cathair2906's Nexus 5X and thus up the RAM capacity to 4GB.

Reportedly, 1GB of RAM can be added to various smartphones for a price lower than $60. The user sent his Nexus 5X with bootloop issue to China for CPU fixing and aside from fixing the problem, the company also upgraded the RAM capacity on the device.

This practice voids the warranty on the smartphone

4GB of RAM seems the maximum amount that local Chinese companies will upgrade smartphones belonging to users who don't mind voiding their warranty. The owner of the Nexus 5X smartphone also update his device from Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow to Android 7.1.2 Nougat without encountering any issues and stated that the smartphone is much faster than before.

It's worth highlighting that such a practice voids the warranty on your smartphone, as it is conducted at unofficial centers. Most likely, the local company in China can up the RAM capacity of a number of smartphones, but the actual models weren't revealed.

In a similar note, we recently reported about a guy who went to China and built an iPhone 6s from scratch, using spare smartphone parts that he found at the market. The process required months to complete, but the end result is quite impressive and the smartphone seems to run smoothly. China truly seems like the place where anything is possible, good and bad.

Huawei Launches Enjoy 7 Plus Smartphone with Android 7.0 Nougat & 4,000mAh Battery

Last month, the third largest global smartphone brand, Huawei launched the Huawei P10 Lite and Y5 2017 mid-range smartphones. Now, the company came with a new mid-range device called Honor Enjoy 7 Plus. It is the successor the Enjoy 6S smartphone launched in the second half of 2016. Recently, Huawei's sub-brand, Honor launched the Huawei Enjoy 6S as Honor 6C in Europe alongside the flagship Honor 8 Pro. Talking about the Enjoy 7 Plus, it sports an all-metal body with rounded edges. As seen with most of the recently launched Huawei smartphones, the new Enjoy 7 Plus also runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat based EMUI 5.1 out of the box.

It sports a 5.5-inch IPS display with HD (1280 x 720 pixels) resolution and a 2.5D curved glass laid on top. Under the hood is the 64-bit Snapdragon 435 MSM8940 octa-core processor coupled with Adreno 505 GPU. There is also 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. There is also a MicroSD card slot for further expansion of storage on this device. Coming to the cameras, there is a 12MP autofocus camera with LED flash on the rear and an 8MP fixed focus camera on the front for selfies and video calls. While the Huawei smartphones equipped with dual cameras lacks any camera bump, the single sensor on the mid-range devices protrudes out of the body.

The device packs a big 4,000mAh non-removable battery that can easily give a day-long battery life. On the right edge, we can find the volume rocker and power button, whereas on the left edge is a hybrid SIM card slot. The circular fingerprint sensor placed on the rear of the device also supports gestures. It can be used as a shutter button in the camera app or else swiping down bring the notification panel. Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 3.5mm Audio port, and a MicroUSB 2.0 port. It measures 153.6 × 76.4 × 8.35 mm, but there is no information about the weight of this device. The Huawei Enjoy 7 Plus is priced at 1599 Yuan in China.

While this device will not be launched with the same name in the international markets, soon we might see this device with a new name outside of China. Last year's Huawei Enjoy 6S came with the similar specifications as seen on the Enjoy 7 Plus. It came with smaller 5-inch HD display and sports the same processor, RAM, and storage as on its predecessor. On the camera front, the Enjoy 6S sports a 13MP primary camera and a 5MP secondary camera. The Enjoy 6S is backed by a 3,020mAh which is smaller than the whopping 4,000mAh battery on the Enjoy 7 Plus. Stay tuned on Phone Radar for more details about the upcoming Huawei smartphones.
